Stumpwork is the name given to a style of raised and padded embroidery, originating in England in the second half of the seventeenth century

I've been promising to share more pics from my trip to my cousin's 1700's Cape Cod home in Connecticut, so I thought I would share pics of this amazing art!

I was utterly fascinated by these 3 dimensional embroideries called Stumpwork. My cousin tells me they would have been made by young girls in England during the 1600's.
Some are mere subjects, which she says would most likely have been made available in a kit, and only those w/ money would have been able to afford to purchase these kits. Others are far more intricate and tell a story through "scenes", and those are truly truly amazing to me. To think of the time and thought invested, and to think they were handmade by young girls. I found myself staring and wondering who's little hands held the needle and thread that brought these to life so long ago. And to think they are still around. Amazing!

I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I did, although it's really hard to capture the charm w/ a camera.

If you look close you can see the dogs running. They are chasing a rabbit.
